When should you book your newborn session?

New parents frequently ask two questions: When should we book the newborn session? How old should the baby be to take newborn pictures? This is confusing for parents because they think they should book this session when the baby is already here. They wait until the very last minute, and sometimes it’s hard to fit a newborn session into the calendar.

It’s best to book a newborn session during the second trimester of pregnancy. Photographers usually book a certain number of babies per month, based on due dates. This will ensure the photographer can provide the same service every client deserves without overbooking. It also allows the flexibility to schedule an early session in case the baby arrives early.

The actual date for the session is booked once parents let their photographer know that the baby is here. The date for the session will depend on different factors (for example: if you’re a first time mom and need time to adjust, or if you had a c-section and need extra time to recover). We need to make sure that the pediatrician gives the ok that the baby is healthy. Newborns are best photographed within the first two weeks of their life. This is important because during this short time frame; your baby is naturally curled up, and sleeps deep and for more time, which is important for posing a baby. You can always get some eyes open shots of your baby, but the session is mainly performed with baby being asleep. The years of experience I have in posing newborns have showed me that the earlier we do this session, the better experience it is for the parents and the baby.
