In Home Newborn Photography | Capturing your newborn’s first days in your home

Are you expecting a baby and don’t want to travel to a photography studio with your newborn? An in-home lifestyle Newborn session is the perfect option for you, and is an easier and more relaxing option for parents (especially if there’s another toddler at home.) Mom has just delivered a baby, parents are sleepless during the first nights, and are adjusting to a new routine. To have someone come to take professional pictures in the comfort of your own home sounds like an amazing (and relieving) option!

If you’re considering this option for your newborn session, then here in this blog you’ll find some things you should know, and some tips on how to prepare:

  • In-home newborn sessions are all about candid shots, capturing the bonding with the newest addition to the family. This is a natural and very relaxed session.

  • A couple days before your session, I recommend organizing the outfits that you, your partner, and kids (if applicable) will be wearing for the session. I suggest neutral or pastel colors such as white, cream, black, or beige. The main point of focus should be the beautiful bonding in your family.

  • These are the typical rooms that we can use for the session and use them as a background: nursery, master bedroom, or living area. Make sure to declutter everything you don’t want photographed in the room. I suggest rooms to be tidied before the session.

  • It’s best to use areas in your home with the most natural lighting available. If that’s not an option in your home, no worries! Make sure to tell this to your photographer so he/she can plan accordingly and bring a flash.

  • Having a manicure may not be an option a few days after delivering a baby. Also, not everyone gets their nails done regularly. I recommend removing previous polish before the session, removing debris, and cleaning your nails. Parents will be holding the baby and hands will be very visible in many pictures, so it’s important to take care of this detail.

  • Make sure to steam your clothing. Believe me, the wrinkles will be very visible on your pictures.

  • You can feed the baby 2-3 hours prior session and prepare to feed again as soon as the photographer arrives to your home.

As you can see, it’s all about the little details we need take into consideration to make of this session a lifelong memory and experience. Personally, I ask my clients on their questionnaire to send me pictures of the areas we can use, to help me plan the session. That way, when I arrive to their home, I know how to start setting up my equipment. I’m happy to help move stuff if needed, or give you recommendations on how to setup the areas for the session.

I hope all this info helps and serves you if you’re considering having your newborn session at home!
